Parent Engagement
As situations warrant, teachers who hold an Interim Professional Certificate are expected to demonstrate consistently that they understand:
KSA #12: the importance of engaging parents, purposefully and meaningfully, in all aspects of teaching and learning. They know how to develop and implement strategies that create and enhance partnerships among teachers, parents and students.

The old saying that "it takes a village to raise a child" is, in my opinion, true. As parents play the most significant roles in shaping their children, I think it is not only important but beneficial for teachers to build relationships and keep in contact with students' parents.
While my contact with parents during PSI and PSII was fairly minimal, my experience with parents during PSIII was extremely valuable. I began the semester by sending an email to the parents of all my students. I spent time introducing myself and my expectations for their kids in my classroom and I also invited them to tell me "in a million words or fewer" about their kids. I was pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information I gleaned from their emails - information I would not have gotten by getting to know the student!
In addition to the introductory email to parents, also took and made both phone calls and emails throughout the semester to parents as necessary.
