Proactive
I believe the best defense against behavior and management issues in the classroom is a good offense. In my experience, if lessons are thoroughly planned and engaging for the students then there are fewer opportunities for students to engage in inappropriate behavior. To this end, I strive to create the most engaging lessons I can for my students. Planning engaging lessons was part of my PSIII professional growth plan. I also like to start the semester off by setting clear and concise expectations that center on respect. I emphasize respect as a two-way street: just as I expect them to respect me, they should expect that I respect them too.
Reactive
When behavior issues do arise in my classroom, I make a reasoned judgement about which of the following strategies I use:

- proximity to student
- saying the student's name
- separation of students behaving poorly when sitting together
- provide student with a choice: participate appropriately in class or sit outside the classroom
- private conversation with student
- give positive feedback to reinforce good behaviors
- contact parents
- contact administration
